Internal auditing is one of the most vital tools for continual improvement, and as such, this tool is intended to provide Top Management with objective, fact-based information upon which strategic decisions may be based.

One of the most important requirements of an internal audit is that it is fully focused on assessing the effectiveness of the processes that are inherent to the quality management system. Where such processes are found to be deficient, the audit will ultimately lead to improvement in those processes, since a non-conformance in a process is, more often than not, to do with a failure to comply with the relevant standard or procedures.

Why do Internal Audits?

Clearly, the purpose of internal auditing is to measure the effectiveness of the quality management system and its associated processes and the auditor’s role is to gauge how well this system is functioning through the gathering of objective evidence.

The auditee will often be a processes owner; they are the experts of that process and as such will provide an invaluable insight into the mechanics of that process. The auditor is there to verify that the processes are documented, implemented and understood. He will also seek confirmation that the processes complies with the necessary requirements, that the process is effective and that it continually improves.

The Human Aspect of Auditing

Good auditors realise very early on that they are dealing with personalities as much as processes and systems. Whilst the intent of the audit a serious one, often light humour, politeness and diplomacy are the best ways to build rapport.

It is vital that every effort is made to reassure those being audited that its primary function serves as a tool for improvement and not to name and shame. If you new are new to auditing, acknowledge this fact, be open and honest. It is also important that you explain to those being audited that they are free to openly express their views during the audit.

Remember that you, the auditor, are also there to learn. Always discuss the issues you have identified with the people being audited and always provide guidance as to what is expected in terms rectifying any non-conformances or observations that you have raised.

Let those being audited know that they are welcome to read your notes and findings; the audit is not a secret.

Be careful not to be drawn into arguments concerning your observations and it is never appropriate to name people directly in the audit report, if you do, people automatically become defensive.

Preparing for the Audit

Preparation is the key to a meaningful audit, and as such, you should have an audit schedule and a well defined audit plan for each process.

Be sure to communicate the audit plan to all parties involved as well as Top Management so that they are aware of the audit, this helps to reinforce your mandate.

The audit schedule should be a living document and should not be cast in stone but instead, it should be allowed to evolve organically with the needs of the business. Always review previous audit reports and non-conformance reports and check that any previous corrective actions are still operating.

Six Elementary Audit Questions

Often these basic audit questions will help guide the audit in the right direction since they will often unlock the doors to information the auditor requires in order to accurately assess the particulars of a process.

- What are your responsibilities? (5.5.1)

- How do you know how to carry them out? (6.2)

- What are the objectives of your processes? (5.4.1 & 7.1.a)

- What is the quality policy and where is it found? (5.3.d)

- How do you know which documents to use and whether they are correct? (4.2.3)

- What outputs does your process create and how are your records maintained? (4.2.4)

Summary

Define what you want to measure; decide how are you going to measure it and decide what objective evidence should be provided to convince you that an activity is performed in accordance with the process. An audit of your key quality management activities will always be more relevant and produce more meaningful results than a simple procedural audit.

Bridgend is a town situated in South Wales, its name in welsh is Pen-y-bont. The town’s name comes originally from the bridge that crossed the River Ogmore but the River Ewenny also passes through the town. Bridgend historically developed as a market town conveniently situated between the cities of Swansea in the West and Cardiff in the East. Over recent years due to transport links the town has grown dramatically. There are direct rail links to London. Cardiff International airport is approximately thirty minutes away by car and there are excellent road links with the town being in very close proximity of the M4 motorway. As such the Town has continued to grow in terms of population.

The business and industrial areas of Bridgend has also seen substantial expansion over the past 30 years or so. Again, this can be greatly attributed to its geographical location and transport infra-structure. Bridgend has a number of industrial estates and there are businesses of all sizes in the area.

There are a number of very large companies with a presence in Bridgend including; Ford which has an engine plant in Bridgend, Biomet and Logica. Until a few years ago electronics giants Sony had two factories in the Bridgend area, however these operations have been dramatically scaled back to a small presence in just one factory. There are a large and varied number of smaller companies occupying the industrial estates, including heavy manufacturing, light manufacturing, mechanical services, electronics, repairs, recycling and printing sectors.

There are also a considerable number of service companies, including accountants, solicitors, book-keepers, financial advisers, banks, estate agents, call centres and employment agencies. These service companies vary in size and expertise, take accountants for example, there are book-keepers, unqualified accountants right up to Certified and Chartered Accountancy practices. Some being just the owner, with others employing more than fifty employees.

Bridgend also benefits from considerable leisure business these include varied restaurants, take-aways, gyms and health clubs, a cinema, public houses, night clubs and sporting facilities.

Retail businesses in Bridgend are also varied with a number of small and large shops in the town centre, out of town shopping areas and big chain supermarkets. Bridgend also has a discount shopping centre on junction 36 of the M4 motorway. With quality brands sold at discounted prizes. Many people come from far and wide to visit this.

The job role of an auditor is that of a watchdog in every organisation because a company’s financial

image in the market is totally dependent on the auditor’s report. They are the ones who keep an eye on the authenticity of all financial transactions that takes place in any organization. Their basic role involves examining and analysing accounting records and preparing financial reports. They are expected to collect and analyse data to detect errors in accounting, duplicated efforts, whether it is in accordance with laws, regulations and management policies.

A candidate looking for a career path in auditor’s profile is expected to have high level of knowledge and skill set. The ideal candidate should possess sound knowledge of accounting principles and practices, financial markets, critical thinking, analytical and judgmental skills. The job role will not only require the candidate to evaluate information to determine compliance with standards but it also involves co-ordinating with different departments in the organization, identifying object, actions and events, detecting the changes required in processing the information and interacting with internal staff for their assessment.

Apart from providing accounting and book keeping assistance and solutions to organizations, auditors play advisory roles on other financial matters as well such as Taxation, VAT etc. to individuals and firms. A Tax consultant’s basic role is to help its client in optimizing its tax position, identifying and mitigating various risk areas. The job role of a tax consultant involves assisting clients with tax issues which includes preparing their tax returns as well, giving advice on the business expansion plans, helping in rearranging payments and expenditures etc.

The advices given by the tax consultant helps any business in improving their profits and formulating a return in such a way that less amount of tax has to be paid. The candidates looking for a career in tax consultancy are expected to possess excellent communication skills along with the knowledge of tax processing systems, a strong aptitude for mathematics, computer software, federal tax laws, proficiency with accounting etc.

Unlike Tax consultants, VAT (Value added tax) consultants are also the advisors and supporters to their clients. The job role of a VAT consultant requires sound knowledge of VAT laws and norms, principles and practices of accounting etc. In addition to it, he/she is also expected to possess creative and analytical skills, effective communication skills, good mathematical skills, computer knowledge etc. They have to assist the organization in such a way wherein the regulatory norms and organization’s goals are met in the most effective manner.

The whole activity of Auditor jobs is managed by the Audit Manager who plans, schedules and ensures completion of audits on time. Their job role involves co-ordinating with clients for auditing practices, training and mentoring audit staff, analyzing financial data, records and statements, initiating internal audit controls for effective management, maintaining and updating financial databases, integrating best practices and systems in the audit programs etc. They are the ones who head the audit team.

With Nsauditor Network Security Auditor, Systems Administrators are able to gather a wide range of information from all the computers in the network without installing server-side applications on these computers. It is a multi-purpose tool designed to scan networks and hosts for vulnerabilities, and to provide security alerts. Nsauditor Network Security Auditor significantly reduces the total cost of network management in enterprise environments by enabling IT personnel to audit and monitor remote network computers for possible vulnerabilities. The software network auditor module checks network for all potential methods that a hacker might use to attack it, discovers network services and checks them for vulnerabilities. Nsauditor is a complete networking utilities package ( more than 45 network tools in one ) that includes a wide range of tools for network auditing, scanning and monitoring. The product contains a built-in database of known network security vulnerabilities, which allows you to select the items for scanning and add custom entries. Nsauditor can discover NetBios names, audit MS SQL servers, scan for common Adware traces, discover services, devices, processes, installed applications, disks, shared resources, hardware resources, users, local groups and much more. Nsauditor Network Security Auditor has a centralized network monitoring interface, which allows to monitor the entire network from a single computer. Nsauditor Network Monitoring module shows you detailed listings of all TCP and UDP endpoints on your system, including the owning process name, remote address and state of TCP connections, country of origin and service name/description. When you start Nsauditor it will enumerate all active TCP and UDP endpoints, resolving all IP addresses to their domain name versions. You can close established TCP/IP connections by right-clicking on a connection and/or request IP address whois information or trace route. Nsauditor “Adware Scanner” tool scans network computers for common Adware traces. Adware Scanner searches system registry and gives you a quick look at the Adware, malware and spyware installed on your computer or in the range of network computers. Using colored icons Adware Scanner shows harmful objects.

Removable devices create additional challenges for network security protection. Portable storage devices can be used both to download confidential data as well as to introduce a virus into the company network. Nsauditor Network Security Auditor “Removable Explorer” tool gives IT staff more control over unauthorized and dangerous removable devices ( USB device, CD-Rom and DVD ) by allowing them to scan the network for all removable devices that are connected to any one of the network computers. Removable Explorer displays remote network computer USB devices, CD-Rom, DVD drive or other removable storage device information and state, drive type, first and last plug in time, serial number, revision, device name, device vendor and more. Nsauditor performs event log based intrusion detection, monitors the security event logs of Windows 2000/XP/2003 servers or workstations and notifies of the possible intrusions/attacks by using E-mail, Net Send, Speech Recognition method or by playing user selected voice file. In summary, Nsauditor Network Security Auditor is a very complete network tools package for a surprisingly low price.

London accountancy firm SRLV have partnered with Grad Diary to run a competition to win an internship at SRLV for first and second year undergraduates. SRLV is a medium sized practice offering Chartered Accountancy and Business Consulting to both UK and international businesses. From their inception 20 years ago the firm has grown to accommodate 9 partners, over 70 professional and administrative staff within premises in the heart of London’s West End. The internship will be a great opportunity to get first hand experience with a well respected and growing London accountancy firm. The internship will run over summer 2011 for a month, it will be paid and there is also a Moss Bespoke suit or high street vouchers worth £500 up for grabs. The lucky winner will be involved in working with the Entertainment Team in order to understand the services SRLV provide to high profile, successful artists in the music industry. Time will also be spent with the Audit Team, either in the office or at the client’s premises, in order to gain an overview of audit terminology, systems and procedures. The successful entrant will also sit alongside a senior member of the Tax Team to understand the basics of tax compliance on both personal and corporate tax. As well as sitting in on meetings between Partners and clients in the SRLV boardrooms to experience the atmosphere and relationships between the Firm and its clients on a day-to-day basis. The competition is open to 1st & 2nd year undergraduate students only and entrants simply need to submit a one or two page CV and a paragraph of less than 200 words written about a time when the entrant feels they showed leadership. Submissions need to be made to summerinternship ( @ ) graddiary dot com before 1st March 2011 dot Winners will be chosen through a rigorous process of selection and interview which will include involvement of a director at Zenith Search, a leading city header hunter. The job and the work profile of people keep on changing with their increasing expertise along with their graph going up for the knowledge they gain at every stage. Students keep looking for different career opportunities to try something new and set benchmarks in their respective fields. The job options for the students and candidates have increased with the changes in the work culture and the globalisation of the economy. Perfection, stability, winning the race of competition, creativity, innovation, are few of the elements which one has to instil in himself to keep on growing in the industry.

The Job responsibilities and role of the employees are the things which do not remain constant and one has to keep himself updated with all the advancements in his respective industry. Education and courses in a number of fields are provided by the institutes in the country, to make students capable enough to deal with the practicalities of the work field. Every organisation these days is running on the goal of achieving the top position in his concerned industry type. For this, one has to be very much cautious in terms of employing people for the jobs in their company. An efficient and a capable candidate can definitely lead to increase in productivity and hence profit for the organisation.

To beat the competitors and maintain the top level position in the industry, many agencies hire consultant for different sectors of their organisations. The demand of consultants in every field has lead to birth of another job field, i.e. consultants. Job of a consultant is something which is applicable and required in almost all the industry sectors and job fields. The main role of a consultant is to see that the company decisions are taken in the right direction, corresponding to a profitable growth of the company. The students aiming for jobs as consultants are required to have great management skills and should be very much aware of the latest developments in the respective industries. The candidates with management degrees in their fields are mostly preferred due to their management and analytical skills. Because, the job of a consultant demands a person to be very intelligent and of an analytical nature, with a foresighted vision, to judge and hence suggest the organisation about the future moves.

Following are the fields in which a candidate can apply for job as a consultant:

1.) Legal consultant or legal advisor

2.) Marketing consultants

3.) Nursing consultants

4.) Medical consultants

5.) Financial Consultants

6.) Client servicing consultants

7.) Web consultants

The job of a consultant is of varied nature, he is not necessarily supposed to be a full- time employee of the organisation. The consultants are also known as the advisors, and are the most important and integral part of the decision making process of the organisation. They play a very important role for making the organisation grow and achieve the targets successfully. Many people, who are at the higher position of the organisation, also work as consultants for different companies as part time workers. Consultant are normally seen working for different companies, but some companies also hire personal consultants not to leave any space for the leak of internal information and processes details. People employed as internal employees of the organisation are also called as internal experts.

The job of the consultant is primarily focussed on the benefit of the organisation and to save the organisation from falling into any crisis situation. Crisis management is another role, which a consultant needs to perform for the organisation he is associated with. Taking the organisation out of the crisis situation, is one of the most difficult and praise worthy roles played by the consultant. A consultant should be skilled with multiple qualities and efficacies to help the organisation in all possible ways.
